FR Olive tree transplanting: when to do it
Theolive tree is a fruit tree widely cultivated throughout the Mediterranean. Probably originating in Asia Minor and Syria, it is today one of Italy's main crops and therefore plays a fundamental role in our country's economy. On the other hand, it is precisely from the cultivation of olive groves that olive oil, symbol of Made in Italy and excellence of our territory, originates. Resistant to heat and drought, this plant can also easily be grown in pots, as it does not require any special care. To ensure good growth of the olive tree, in particular, a sunny exposure and one or two weekly waterings are necessary. Not only that, a further caution concerns the eventual transplanting of the plant, which must be done when the roots emerge from the drainage holes of the pot. Let us see together how to transplant the olive grove correctly.
In this case it is best to proceed by moving it to a larger pot or to the garden. Planting a new plant, on the other hand, should preferably be done in spring or autumn. However, if the olive tree has been purchased from a nursery, it can also be planted throughout the year, with the exception of the winter months.
Transplanting an olive tree: what is needed
In any case, apart from the period, to ensure correct transplanting it is essential that the nursery material is of good agronomic and sanitary quality and meets the genetic requirements of the chosen variety. For example, the use of certified, small plants (50-100 cm), with a main axis and numerous secondary ramifications, allows good structuring of the future breeding form. Not only that, a vitally important aspect is undoubtedly the underground part of the plant. Having a soil loaf with a good presence of white, well-branched and not coiled roots along the soil loaf, in fact makes it easier to overcome the stress phenomena of transplanting the olive grove, which generate an environmental change with a consequent reduction of the root system and aerial apparatus, as well as a greater susceptibility to disease and nutritional/environmental stress.
Olive transplanting: how to protect and strengthen the plant
And it doesn't end there. The transplantation of the olive grove can be further preserved by using some specific products designed to promote faster root growth. In this regard, we at Ms Biotech recommend Rizotech plus and Dualtech Activator Plus.
