Microorganisms and plants: the benefits

What are micro-organisms?

The microorganisms are tiny, generally single-celled living beings that populate our organism and everything around us. Although invisible to the naked eye, they have very similar characteristics to other living beings and are divided into four groups:

  • Bacteria
  • Fungi and moulds
  • Yeasts
  • Viruses

Some of them are carriers of diseases and are therefore dangerous to both humans and the environment. Others, on the other hand, are useful microorganisms that are used in the preparation of food, such as bread, wine, cheese, etc., or to promote crops. In fact, micro-organisms also play an important role in ecosystems as decomposers, as they are able to transform dead organic matter (saprophytes) into inorganic matter, which is useful for plants to live on. Some species of bacteria and fungi in particular are used right as biostimulantsin that they promote plant growth.

The benefits for plants

Specifically, these micro-organisms act by producing a series of enzymes that are useful to the plant and stimulating endogenous defences. This improves nutrient uptake through altered levels of plant hormones. This mechanism in fact modifies the root architecture: it increases the mass, branching and quantity of root hairs. Not only that, the alteration of hormone levels allows an increase in volume of the root system and consequently improves the uptake of water and nutrients.

The benefits of microorganisms also extend to soil quality. These have the merit of creating in the rhizosphere (the part of the soil closest to the roots), optimal conditions for the plant to assimilate the nutrients it needs more quickly. In addition, some of them are capable of making insoluble phosphorus and unavailable iron (siderophores) available again.).

Equally important are the development inhibiting actions and competition for space and nutrients against many pathogenic fungal species.Microorganisms therefore have very interesting properties that make them perfect for use in agriculture as biofertilisers, biostimulants or bioprotectors.

These substances are in fact also able to strengthen the plant's defences,preventing infections and harmful diseases. The use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM) in synergy with rhizobacteria in particular,induces biochemical and structural changes that make plants more tolerant to biotic stresses, induced by another living organism, and abiotic stresses, i.e. generated by a deficiency or excess of an environmental factor.

These microorganisms are generally found in the compositions of biostimulant products, natural supplements designed to promote plant development and growth. Unlike fertilisers and chemicals, they are also completely risk-free for the environment and therefore have zero impact. Their specificity, in particular, is essentially linked to their high invasive and adaptability to environments, which allows the desired benefits to be obtained without leaving any type of residue on the treated culture.
