They live in the soil, are microscopic in size and, in plant-parasitic species, can directly attack the root system, compromising the plant's ability to properly absorb water and nutrients.

One of the most complex aspects is diagnosis itself: the first visible symptoms on the aerial parts can often be confused with nutritional deficiencies, water stress or other agronomic issues. In the meantime, the root system may already be severely compromised.

For this reason, in the management of nematodes we consider it essential to adopt a preventive approach and intervene on the biological balance of the rhizosphere. At MS Biotech we have developed Nematech, a microbiological solution designed to help crops overcome root system stress even in the presence of root-knot nematodes.

What are nematodes?

Nematodes are microscopic worm-like organisms belonging to the phylum Nematoda. They are extremely widespread in nature and can live in the soil, in water, and inside other organisms.

It is important to clarify that not all nematodes are harmful to plants. Many species are a natural part of the soil ecosystem and take part in the biological processes that occur in the rhizosphere.

The agricultural problem mainly concerns plant-parasitic nematodes, which are capable of feeding on plant tissues and, in particular, the root system.

Among those of greatest agronomic interest are nematodes belonging to genera such as Meloidogyne spp., Heterodera spp. and Tylenchulus semipenetrans.

Plant nematodes: what happens to the roots?

The root system represents the main point of contact between the plant and the soil. When it is damaged, the entire physiological balance of the crop can be affected.

Some plant-parasitic nematodes penetrate or feed on root tissues, interfering with normal root functioning. Root-knot nematodes belonging to the genus Meloidogyne, for example, can cause the formation of characteristic root galls.

A compromised root becomes less efficient at absorbing water and nutrients. The consequence can be a plant that shows growth difficulties even when irrigation and fertilisation appear adequate.

How to recognise the presence of nematodes in the soil

Symptoms on the aerial parts are not always specific. Precisely for this reason, an infestation may initially be underestimated.

Among the signs that may suggest the presence of nematodes are:

slow or stunted growth;

yellowing of the leaves;

withering and water stress-like symptoms;

uneven crop development;

reduction in productivity;

weak or deformed root system;

presence of root galls in the case of certain species.

Another interesting sign is the irregular distribution of symptoms within the plot, with areas featuring plants that are noticeably less developed than others.

However, diagnosis should not be based solely on visual observation. When there is a suspicion of a significant presence of nematodes, soil and root system analysis allows for a better understanding of the situation.

Why nematodes can reduce productivity

The problem is not solely about the direct damage to the roots.

When the root system loses efficiency, the plant has to cope with several stress factors simultaneously. The ability to use available water decreases, nutrient uptake can be compromised, and vegetative development slows down.

The crop may therefore also become more sensitive to other environmental stresses.

In the most significant cases, this can result in a decrease in the quantity and quality of production, with significant economic consequences for the farm.

How to eliminate nematodes from the soil?

One of the most frequent online searches is precisely “how to eliminate nematodes from the soil”. From an agronomical point of view, however, speaking simply of elimination is rather incorrect.

Nematodes are part of the soil ecosystem and the objective should primarily be to manage plant-parasitic populations and limit their impact on crops.

The strategy can comprise various practices: crop rotations, management of plant residues, use of healthy plant material, soil monitoring and targeted interventions on the rhizosphere.

In recent years, interest has also grown in the use of beneficial microorganisms capable of establishing favourable relationships in the root zone and contributing to the biological management of stresses caused by soil-borne pathogens.

The role of Pochonia and Arthrobotrys

Microbiological research has made it possible to identify microorganisms of particular interest for the management of the root environment.

Among these we find fungi belonging to the genera Pochonia and Arthrobotrys.

Their use makes it possible to adopt a biological approach based on the activity of selected microorganisms within the rhizosphere, supporting the plant precisely in the zone most exposed to the presence of plant-parasitic nematodes.

It is on this principle that we have developed Nematech.

Nematech: our microbiological solution for stresses caused by nematodes

Nematech It is an innovative liquid formulation based on viable spores of Pochonia chlamydosporia and Arthrobotrys spp., developed by MS Biotech to help overcome the stresses caused by attacks from root system pathogens, even in the presence of root-knot nematodes.

The formulation has a fungal spore concentration of Pochonia spp. and Arthrobotrys spp. greater than 10⁸ CFU/g and also contains Glomus spp. mycorrhizae and rhizosphere bacteria.

The aim is to intervene directly in the root environment, exploiting the potential of beneficial microorganisms and promoting conditions more favourable to crop development.

Nematech is indicated, among others, in the presence of nematodes belonging to the genera Meloidogyne spp., Heterodera spp. and Tylenchulus semipenetrans.

When should Nematech be used?

The best strategy against nematodes should not begin when the crop already shows severe symptoms of distress.

For this reason, we anticipate the use of Nematech already in the early stages of the crop cycle.

On vegetable and ornamental crops, for example, the product can be applied pre-transplanting by immersion or drenching of the blocks and modular trays. Subsequently, it can be applied via fertigation during the new root growth phases.

On young vines and tree crops it can be used at planting and subsequently at vegetative resumption, whereas on turf it can be applied at seeding and post-emergence.

The frequency of applications must be assessed according to the crop, agronomic conditions and the level of stress present, always following the methods and dosages indicated in the technical data sheet.

Rhizosphere prevention and health

When we talk about nematodes, prevention assumes particular importance.

Waiting for a crop to show severely stunted growth, widespread yellowing or seriously compromised root systems means intervening when part of the yield potential may already have been lost.

That is why we at MS Biotech work on a broader concept of balance between plant, root and soil microorganisms.

A biologically active rhizosphere, proper agronomic management and the targeted use of selected microorganisms represent important tools to help crops deal with nematode-related problems in a more sustainable way.

Conclusions

Plant nematodes are a difficult problem to identify and are potentially very damaging to agricultural production. Their impact on the root system can compromise the uptake of water and nutrients, slow down vegetative development and reduce both the quality and quantity of the harvest.

Management must therefore start with soil monitoring and a preventative strategy focused on the health of the root system.

With Nematech, At MS Biotech, we harness microbiology for agriculture through a formulation based on Pochonia chlamydosporia and Arthrobotrys spp., designed to help overcome root stress even in the presence of root-knot nematodes.

The aim is not simply to intervene when the problem is already evident, but to create the conditions for a more balanced, efficient crop capable of expressing its full productive potential.

FAQ on plant nematodes

What are plant nematodes?

Plant-parasitic nematodes are microscopic organisms present in the soil that can feed on plant tissues, particularly the roots. Some species can impair the uptake of water and nutrients and reduce crop development and productivity.

How to tell if there are nematodes in the soil?

Stunted growth, yellowing, wilting, reduced yield and deformed roots can be signs of their presence. In root-knot nematodes, such as certain Meloidogyne species, characteristic galls may appear on the roots. For an accurate diagnosis, it is advisable to carry out specific soil and root analyses.

How to eliminate nematodes from the soil?

In agriculture it is more correct to speak of control and management of plant-parasitic nematodes rather than complete eradication. Crop rotation, monitoring, correct agronomic management and the use of selected microorganisms can be integrated into a strategy aimed at limiting their impact on crops.

How does Nematech work?

Nematech it is a liquid microbiological formulation for root application based on viable spores of Pochonia chlamydosporia and Arthrobotrys spp. It has been developed to help overcome stress caused by root system pathogens even in the presence of root-knot nematodes such as Meloidogyne spp., Heterodera spp. and Tylenchulus semipenetrans.

When is it best to intervene against nematodes?

Prevention is particularly important. It is preferable to establish a strategy before root damage becomes significant, by intervening during the development stages of the root system and monitoring the nematode pressure in the plot over time.

I nematodi delle piante rappresentano una problematica particolarmente insidiosa per numerose colture agricole.
