{"id":1975,"date":"2022-06-22T17:01:04","date_gmt":"2022-06-22T15:01:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.msbiotech.net\/?p=1975"},"modified":"2023-12-18T12:39:08","modified_gmt":"2023-12-18T11:39:08","slug":"biocontrol-of-harmful-insects-the-fungus-beauveria-bassiana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.msbiotech.net\/en\/biocontrollo-degli-insetti-nocivi-il-fungo-beauveria-bassiana\/","title":{"rendered":"Biocontrol pests: the fungus Beauveria bassiana"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"tw-target-text-container\" class=\"tw-ta-container F0azHf tw-nfl\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<h1><span class=\"markedContent\">BEAUVERIA BASSIANA<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msbiotech.net\/en\/beauveria-bassiana-an-insect-parasitic-fungus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>beauveria bassiana<\/strong><\/a> is a fungus discovered in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">1835 by Agostino Bassi, who identified<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">it as the agent of a disease <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">affecting the silkworm. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Naturally present in soils <\/strong><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>all over the world,<\/strong>where it lives as <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a saprophyte<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">feeding <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">decaying matter, it has recently found use in pest biocontrol.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traduzione\">Pests and phytophagous insects<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Insects<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">are the most widespread herbivores <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on plants, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">causing<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">significant<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">productive and economic losses<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to all crops, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">worldwide. Therefore, the need to <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">limit the damage caused by pests <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">is of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">paramount<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">importance in<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">agriculture.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"> As early as two millennia ago, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in China, India, Europe and North America <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">substances of plant origin <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">plant origin with <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">insecticidal activity were used. It was not until the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mid-1930s and early <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">1950s, however, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">that synthetic chemical<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">insecticides were discovered. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Unfortunately, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">their<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">prolonged use<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">generates<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">resistance<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">effects <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in insects<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as well as an undesirable impact<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">on humans and the environment. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Cases of intoxication among<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">agricultural workers and consumers<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">have been recorded, as well as contamination <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of water, soil and food.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Useful micro-organisms for biocontrol of pests<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">In this scenario,<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">scientific and industrial communities have <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">expended considerable energy in recent <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">decades, with the aim of developing<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">effective <strong>and environmentally sustainable alternatives.<\/strong><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>Among<\/strong>the latter, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the discovery<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and subsequent<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">use<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of entomopathogenic <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">microbial species <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msbiotech.net\/en\/products\/rizotech-mb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> <em>Beauveria bassiana deserves special mention.<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1985 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.msbiotech.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2-Figure1-1-1024x426.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.msbiotech.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2-Figure1-1-1024x426.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.msbiotech.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2-Figure1-1-300x125.png 300w, https:\/\/www.msbiotech.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2-Figure1-1-768x319.png 768w, https:\/\/www.msbiotech.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2-Figure1-1-16x7.png 16w, https:\/\/www.msbiotech.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/2-Figure1-1.png 1356w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"tw-target-text-container\" class=\"tw-ta-container F0azHf tw-nfl\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<p id=\"tw-target-text\" class=\"tw-data-text tw-text-large tw-ta\" dir=\"ltr\" data-placeholder=\"Traduzione\"><em><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"it\">Fig. 1 Wide range of arthropods infected with Beauveria bassiana s.l.: a Whitefly nymph Bemisia tabaci biotype B (Credit: Gabriel M. Mascarin); d Fruit fly Anastrepha<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>How does <span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"> Beauveria bassiana act?<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Beauveria bassiana is <strong>active against various insect species,<\/strong>acting on both larvae and adults.
