And maintaining and stimulating this life is crucial, as most of it (over 90 %) is indispensable for plant life.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1111\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1111\" style=\"width: 646px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1111\" id=\"caption-attachment-1111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fungal symbiosis is evident on the root system (strawberry)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Mycorrhizal fungi<\/h2>\n<p>These fungi live by attaching themselves to the roots of most agricultural species (<strong>around 90 %)<\/strong>forming mutualistic symbioses called <strong>'mycorrhizae'.<\/strong>Think about it: the fungus colonises the plant's roots, supplying it with water and nutrients that it absorbs from the soil through its external network of hyphae, while the plant supplies the fungus with organic matter (sugars, proteins, vitamins).<\/p>\n<p>Plants that host symbiont fungi in their roots show not only <strong>greater growth,<\/strong>due to the <strong>better mineral absorption<\/strong> by the fungal hyphae that extend from the root to the soil, but also <strong>greater stress tolerance,<\/strong>characterising a more vital and balanced development than non-mycorrhized plants.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>BACTERIA IN THE RHIZOSPHERE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The presence of certain bacteria in the rhizosphere, on the other hand, creates an <strong>inhospitable environment for many pathogenic species,<\/strong>with which a real fight for space and nutrients ensues.<\/p>\n<p>Some bacteria also <strong>solubilise nutrients<\/strong> such as Phosphorus and make it more available to plants.<\/p>\n<p>Hence the importance of restoring and preserving the <strong>biological fertility of over-exploited agricultural soils<\/strong>through the adoption of innovative, low environmental impact cultivation systems and techniques,<strong> such as minimum tillage,<\/strong>localised fertilisation and the use of more efficient and less environmentally impactful fertilising materials.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>The advantages brought about by the symbiotic association, which is established between fungi, bacteria and plant roots, are extraordinary:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Increased root surface area and volume
