Dry grain tanning: what is it and what is it used for?

What is cereal tanning?

The tanning of cereals is a treatment that consists of applying substances such as pesticides, fertilisers or biostimulants to the seed in a precise and localised manner. The aim is to counteract the action of pathogens in the germination and early stages of development, while also stimulating faster plant emergence.

Tanning enables the plant to be strengthened, making it more resistant to abiotic stress. In this way, it is possible to safeguard the value of the seed to the benefit of productivity and crop quality. On the other hand, the advantages of this treatment are widely demonstrated. Indeed, it is estimated that without the use of tanned seed, crop losses of more than 20% and possible cost increases of up to 200% could occur.

Cereal tanning in fungal adversity

Not only that, tanning of cereals cereal tanning also plays a key role in the management of fungal adversities. A particularly problematic example is the disease complex known as 'eyespot', which not only requires this type of treatment, but must also be dealt with in a timely manner. In this regard, certain formulations are able to control pathogens present on the seed tegument. Specifically, they form an effective protective barrier around the seeds until seedling emergence.

Others, instead, have a more prolonged action and can even reach the fungi present inside the seed itself and the seedling. Normally, in these cases, broad-spectrum fungicides or the use of mixtures of systemic and contact products are used.

Dry grain tanning: the most effective products

We at Ms Biotech, for example, recommend Active seed coat and ACTISEED.

ACTIVESEED COAT is a concentrated powder formulation specifically for the dry tanning of cereals. The product contains a mix of growth-promoting microorganisms that are useful for crop development and protection. ACTIVESEED COAT promotes crop growth by making the plant less susceptible to biotic and abiotic stresses. The special formulation facilitates seed germination by strengthening the root system of young seedlings. In addition, the intimate plant-microorganism relationship contributes to the absorption of nutrients into the soil, maximising fertiliser and manure inputs. Cereal tanning: all the benefits

In short, by using the right products, tanning of cereals can really make a difference. Not only that, this treatment also has many advantages in terms of environmental sustainability. In fact, the seed treatment is spot-treatment and is therefore not carried out in the open field on the entire surface but only on the seed.

Moreover, it is also effective with reduced dosages of active ingredient, which means savings in a. i. and less losses. Another great advantage of this treatment lies in the duration of protection. Tanning, in fact, if carried out with a product with a broad spectrum of action, is able to control all seed pathogens and defend the plant right up to the first stages of development, allowing, in some cases, to save at least the first full-field treatment. Finally, a further advantage of tanning concerns the possibility of acting early on the problem, a factor that should not be underestimated and that in some cases may prove crucial for the survival of the plant.
